Nearly 600 Volunteers Signed Up for Special Olympics Texas’ Winter Games

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE : February 02, 2022

TEXAS – Special Olympics Texas is set to host the 2022 Winter Games in the cities of Bee Cave and Lakeway on the weekend of February 18-20, 2022. The event will showcase six different sports including Powerlifting, Volleyball, Cycling, Golf, Floorball, and FUNdamental sports.

This statewide competition has exceeded Volunteer Services Manager Noah Willoughby’s expectations in the significant number of volunteers already signed up for the event. Noah stated that Special Olympics Texas currently has 595 volunteers and counting committed to serving at the event. This number continues to climb every day due to Noah’s commitment to spreading the word about the Winter Games. The statewide Summer Games competition, set to be hosted last year, had around 400 volunteers signed up prior to cancellation due to Covid-19. This significant increase in volunteers allows for the Winter Games 2022 to be on a path to success.

Willoughby described his main strategy as “going out and personally talking to people about Special Olympics and our events”. This allowed for the organization’s volunteer base to grow significantly with several weeks still left to go before the competition date. Some of the groups who have committed to serving at the Winter Games include Texas State Football and Volleyball, Girl Scouts of Central Texas, UPS, the Church of Latter-day Saints, Insight Global, Greenleaf Book Group, Pace Setters from Austin, as well as Sigma Chi and a business fraternity from the University of Texas. These groups, along with many more, are credited with allowing Special Olympics Texas to reach such high volunteer numbers.

Noah states that because the number of volunteers is so significant, there are limited positions available to serve hands-on at the Winter Games. He noted that although there are a small number of openings, “we are always looking for fans in the stands”. He encourages both independent individuals and community groups to still sign up for Winter Games and help support the athletes.
