Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) has named The Bethea Family its 2012 Family of the Year and Gary Schwartz its Unified Sports Partner of the Year.

Robert and Shelley Bethea began volunteering in 2005 and have a son and daughter who compete in the program.  Mrs. Bethea is a certified coach in six SOTX sports and Mr. Bethea is on the South Texas area’s Spring Games committee.  Both also help out with local fundraisers and trainings.

Gary Schwartz is a lifelong SOTX volunteer.  He got involved with SOTX in 1983 as a coach for his son’s team.  He now serves on the training committee and is a bowling competition director, as well as a committee member, coach and Unified Partner.

The Unified Sports® Partner of the Year award is presented to the individual who embodies the philosophy of Unified Sports® by committing themselves to the integration of athletes in the community, promoting skill development and fostering self-esteem among athletes on their Unified Sports® team.

The Family of the Year award is presented to the family that tirelessly works together to achieve the goals and mission of SOTX.  On October 26, Special Olympics Texas will present the awards to The Bethea Family and Schwartz for their achievements and recognize them at Opening Ceremonies for the 2012 Fall Classic in Bryan/College Station.
