Jordan Svehlak, a powerlifting athlete with the Hill Country Stars, loves the competition…and powerlifting. Svehlak lifts with Geoff Sumner, an Austin Police Department officer who competes with him as a Unified Partner. There’s at least one other SOTX athlete/Austin PD Unified Team competing this weekend.

On Saturday, Svehlak said he was going for the big one: “Today, I’m going to be going for the biggest lift on the deadlift, the 305 (pounds). Going to try to make this a record breaker. I have been an athlete with SOTX for six years. Powerlifting is my favorite, but I’m looking forward to doing track soon. When the spring and summer games start, I get ready to throw the shotput. The shotput is really my only good sport in the spring and summer.  I’ve got a bunch of medals. I don’t know how many, but it’s a bunch!”

Svehlak said he loves the competition that Special Olympics provides. “The competition inspires me, always. I just want to make the whole competition more lively.” And he does make it more lively, whenever he lifts.
