Laredo Lights its Torch for Special Olympics Texas

Light the way for Special Olympics Texas!  SOTX - Laredo area is getting fired up for its 2010 Torch Run Kickoff.  The kickoff is a prelude to the 2010 Summer Games in Arlington, May 27-30.    

Dozens of Laredo law enforcement agencies – Laredo ISD Campus Police, Laredo Police Department, US Border Patrol - Laredo, US Customs and Border Protection - Laredo, Webb County Constable - Precinct 1, Laredo Fire Department, Corrections Corporation of America, Texas A&M International University Campus Police, United ISD Campus Police, Webb County Sheriff's Department, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and Texas Department of Public Safety – will have a part in the event, which will start with a press conference at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 26, during the Webb County Commissioners Court meeting.  The meeting will take place at 1000 Houston in Laredo. 

Immediately after the Commissioners Court meets, the LETR team will start the local torch run thru the streets of Laredo.  The run will take place thru San Bernardo Avenue to Calton Road.  The agencies will continue on IH-35 and stop in Cotulla, Dilley and Pearsall. Afterwards, they'll pass the torch on to SOTX - San Antonio area.

About the Law Enforcement Torch Run
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is Special Olympics' largest grassroots fund-raiser and public awareness vehicle. At its most basic level, the Torch Run is an actual running event where officers and athletes run the Special Olympics "Flame of Hope" to the Opening Ceremonies of local competitions, or State, Provincial or World Summer or Winter Games. At its more extensive, the Torch Run program encompasses a variety of fundraising vehicles such as t-shirt or merchandise sales, donations for runners in the Torch Run, corporate donations, and special events.
