Greater Houston area’s Meet in the Middle Wraps up a Marvelous Year

Meet in the Middle had a successful year in Houston with four brand new schools participating and two returning for the "Super" Meet in the Middle program. No school was alike this year in the projects that they completed, but all were spectacular.

Atascocita Middle School – Year 1

This club began a monthly table tennis practice time, so that students with and without intellectual disabilities could learn the game. Their end-of-year rally included three SOTX athletes competing against Atascocita Middle School students in three-minute power rounds.

Bonnette Junior High School – Year 1

This program changed the life of one of the school's students. Raul Bernal was always quiet and kept to himself. At a B.J.H.S. rally, Raul was asked to give an "I am not the R-word" speech, and his demeanor changed. He is now one of the most outgoing students at Bonnette and even completed a project on his own to show MIM sponsors how much they have helped him grow.

Duiett Middle School – Year 2

As part of their year 2 project, this school created a Super Partners Club. Not only did these students meet regularly, they were also fans in the stands for an SOTX athlete on the school's basketball team.  The typically developing students joined their peers with intellectual disabilities at SOTX's Spring Games and they became a united front as they played together in the Duiett-sponsored Bocce Tournament. Great job on truly becoming a SUPER year two School!

Garden Oaks Elementary School – Year 1

This elementary school was the first and only to step up and join Meet in the Middle by having its Partners Club participate on a daily basis with the MIM classes and Partners Club classes.  Each day, the PC students would go into the classroom and work with their peers on their skills for Future Stars Day.  Future Stars Day was wonderful and all partner students loved working with the participants, when asked what they enjoyed most about the program, nearly all of them responded that they loved working with the students!  Most are graduating from Garden Oaks and hope that they can get their new middle schools to start an MIM program.

Pershing Middle School – Year 2

During the Fall 2009 semester at Pershing, students from last year's roster made a huge effort to get the whole school signed up for the second year. Twice the number of students signed up to participate and to top it off, students with and without disabilities joined in activities to show the whole school respect!

Spring High School – Year 1

The implementation of this program was inspired by some of the campus freshman who graduated from the Meet in the Middle program at Duiett Middle School. These students were so impacted last year that they joined forces with Best Buddies to put on a Basketball 3 on 3 and Skills Tournament for Spring I.S.D. Even though this school was only in its first year, they really stepped up and did some pretty "Super" year two projects.

Congratulations and thank you to all of our Meet in the Middle Schools!
