El Paso Lights its Torch for Special Olympics Texas

Light the way for Special Olympics Texas!  SOTX – Greater El Paso area is getting fired up for its 2010 Torch Run Kickoff.  The kickoff is a prelude to the 2010 Summer Games in Arlington, May 27-30.   

The Greater El Paso Torch Run is set for Sunday, May 23.  The runners will meet at 11:00 a.m. in the parking lot of El Paso Community College Valle Verde, located at 919 Hunter.  They'll head northbound from campus on Hunter, make a right onto I-10 and run continuously until they reach I-25, which will take them to Arlington.

From El Paso, 21 torch run officers from several area agencies will run to Arlington for the 2010 Summer Games, which will be held on the University of Texas at Arlington campus. Participating agencies include El Paso Police Department, El Paso County Sheriff's Department, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), U.S. Air Force Military Police and U.S. Customs.

About the Law Enforcement Torch Run
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is Special Olympics' largest grassroots fund-raiser and public awareness vehicle. At its most basic level, the Torch Run is an actual running event where officers and athletes run the Special Olympics "Flame of Hope" to the Opening Ceremonies of local competitions, or State, Provincial or World Summer or Winter Games. At its more extensive, the Torch Run program encompasses a variety of fundraising vehicles such as t-shirt or merchandise sales, donations for runners in the Torch Run, corporate donations, and special events.
