APD Run with the Heroes 5KLace Up for SOTX Support Austin's finest and raise money for Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) - Central Texas Area at the "Run with the Heroes" 5K Run/Walk, presented by the Austin Police Department, Southpark Meadows and Texas MedClinic, on September 12. This year's "Run with the Heroes" will honor Austin Police Officer Drew Bolin, Williamson County EMS Paramedic Tracy Chambers and Austin Firefighter James Glass, all killed in the line of duty. Officer Drew Bolin died on June 2, 1995 after less than five months on the job. A drunk driver killed Bolin while he was directing traffic around an accident on North IH-35 in Austin. During his brief career, Bolin received a commendation for aiding in the arrest of a gang member involved in a robbery. EMS Paramedic Tracy Chambers died on July 4, 2010 in a medical plane crash in Alpine. At the time, she was employed with a private medical transport service, but was previously a 20-year paramedic for Williamson County EMS. The Tracy R. Chambers Scholarship Fund was established in her memory for paramedics in training. Firefighter James Glass, of AFD Engine 6 and Badge #13, died on August 17, 1917 after a wall collapsed on him while fighting a fire at the Kriesle Building on Congress Avenue. In February 2010, the AFD renamed Engine 50 at Central Fire Station to Engine 13 in his honor and later awarded him the postmortem Medal of Honor. For more information on the honorees, click here. The race with a purpose will begin at 8:00 a.m. at Southpark Meadows, located at 9600 I-35 South in Austin, with the post-race awards and celebration immediately following. Pre-registration for the 5K is $25. Late registration after September 6 is $30. Runners may also register on race day beginning at 6:45 a.m. Sign up here!
