Governor Perry and Law Enforcement Officers Carry the Torch for SOTXOfficers Kick Off the Final Leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run on April 29 For Immediate Release: April 21, 2009 AUSTIN – On Wednesday, April 29 at 9:15 a.m., the "super fans" of Special Olympics Texas will meet at the Capitol with Governor Perry to light the torch and kick off the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg. Law enforcement officers from across the state will gather on the south steps of the Capitol for the ceremonious lighting of the Flame of Hope and words from the Governor, Special Olympics Texas President and CEO, Margaret Larsen and SOTX athletes. The Torch will then be run down Congress Avenue in the hands of officers who will pass it along to be carried across Texas. In the coming weeks, the Flame of Hope will make its way to the 2009 Special Olympics Texas Summer Games in Arlington, May 21-24, where thousands will celebrate 40 years of success. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is Special Olympics' largest grassroots fund-raiser and public awareness vehicle and honors the spirit of the Special Olympics movement and the courage of its' athletes. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is an actual running event in which officers and athletes run the "Flame of Hope" to the Opening Ceremonies of local Special Olympics competitions, state Games, National and World Summer or Winter Games.
