SOTX Needs Your Support!
For Immediate Release: September 30, 2008 Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) recognizes the enormity of the disaster of Hurricane Ike. We, along with everyone in the areas affected by the storms, were deeply impacted. More than 6,500 SOTX athletes, 780 coaches, and thousands of volunteers reside in the affected areas. Five SOTX offices were closed due to Hurricane damage; three remained closed today because of the extent of that damage. In our two areas impacted the most, competitions have been postponed or canceled because of damage to facilities and venues. Special Olympics Texas relies solely on funding support from private sources such as individuals, corporations, and foundations. In addition to the damages and emotional toll of Ike, we anticipate the financial impact will extend for many months. We estimate a loss of $600,000 in revenue through the end of 2008. It is crucial that we raise funds to bring our invaluable programs in the affected areas back to full strength in as short a time as possible. Our sports training program helps in building our athletes' lives, developing personal skills to be successful contributing members of society, and giving them a sense of belonging in their communities. While the safety, shelter, and basic necessities for those affected are everyone's first concern, often people with intellectual disabilities are the most vulnerable in a time of crisis. We remain committed to continuing to help our athletes train and compete, and to providing support and hope as athletes, families and volunteers deal with the enormous task of rebuilding their lives. Providing our athletes and their families with the positive environment and support system of Special Olympics Texas will certainly help them regain stability. To this end, we encourage and welcome any financial support to off-set the tremendous impact on our program.
