Law Enforcement Officers Carry the Torch
For Immediate Release: May 13, 2008 On Tuesday, May 20, Law Enforcement Torch Runners will run for a reason through downtown Laredo. Officers will gather at Webb County Commissioners Court, located at 1000 Houston, at 9:00 a.m. for a press conference before they ceremoniously light the torch and run down Laredo Street thru San Bernardo Avenue to Calton Road. The Law Enforcement Torch Run honors the spirit of the Special Olympics movement and the courage of its' athletes. The Torch Run will lead up to the Special Olympics Texas 2008 Summer Games, which take place from May 22-25 in Arlington. Participating law enforcement agencies include: U.S. Border Patrol, Webb County Constable, UISD Campus Police, LISD Campus Police, TAMIU Campus Police, Cotulla TDCJ, Laredo Police Department, U.S. Customs & Border Protection, Laredo Fire Department, Corrections Corporation of America and ICE. The agencies will continue on IH-35 and stop in Cotulla, Dilley and Pearsall. The Torch will be passed on to the South Central Leg in San Antonio. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is an actual running event in which officers and athletes run the "Flame of Hope" to the Opening Ceremonies of local Special Olympics competitions, state Games, National and World Summer or Winter Games. The Law Enforcement Torch Run has been a Special Olympics tradition for more than 25 years; in Texas, the Law Enforcement Torch Run® began in 1985.
