Family of the YearSOTX awards the Bannister family for their dedication For Immediate Release: September 23, 2008 FORT WORTH – Special Olympics Texas has selected Randall, Rhonda, Malyn and Colby Bannister from Fort Worth as the 2008 Family of the Year Award winners. The Bannisters are involved in the Law Enforcement Torch Run and both serve on committees, coach and volunteer at the majority of area and state events along with their daughter Malyn who has volunteered since she was five years old. The family supports Colby, now 22, who has competed in SOTX competitions since he was one year old. The Bannisters found Special Olympics Texas in 1987 after seeing an advertisement in the newspaper for SOTX volunteers. The parents of Colby were both law enforcement officers and saw this opportunity as a perfect fit for them and their son who continues to compete in aquatics, cycling, powerlifting and serves as a Global Messenger. The Bannisters are very proud of Colby's accomplishments and are fueled by his success. The Unified Sports® Partner of the Year Award is dedicated to the individual who embodies the philosophy of Unified Sports®. By dedicating themselves to the integration of athletes in the community, promoting skill development, and fostering self-esteem among athletes on their Unified Sports® team. On October 24, the Bannisters will be given their award and recognized for their achievements at Opening Ceremonies for the 2008 Fall Classic in College Station.
