SOTX Looking for Athletes and Volunteers to Attend 2008 Hill Day

For Immediate Release: November 5, 2007

Would you like to lobby your legislators for support of Special Olympics... and help to make a difference in the lives of people with intellectual disabilities?  You can!  We're looking for eight athletes and eight volunteers from throughout the state interested in representing Texas at Special Olympics' 2008 National Hill Day in Washington, D.C. on March 12, 2008

 

You'll tour some of Washington's most prestigious and historic locations; meet and network with your fellow athletes, volunteers, honored guests, and legislators from throughout the nation; make legislative visits to U.S. Senators and Representatives to share information and represent Special Olympics Texas; enjoy special receptions featuring honored guests. 

 

ATHLETE QUALIFICATIONS:

- Must be a trained Global Messenger. 

- Must be self sufficient and capable of traveling independently from family/guardian.  Must be able to travel via airplane.

- Must be able to complete a full day of visits at the Capitol.

- Must pay for your own airfare, hotel, some meals and personal expenses.  Scholarships in the amount of $200 will be available for athletes, based on need.

- Must be available for travel from March 10-13, 2008.

 

* To offer this opportunity to as many athletes as possible, athletes who have attended Hill Day in the past will not be eligible for consideration.

VOLUNTEER QUALIFICATIONS:

- Must be a registered Class A volunteer.

- Must be at least 21 years of age.

- Must be able to serve as an athlete chaperone.

- Must pay for your own airfare, hotel, some meals and personal expenses.

- Must be available for travel from March 10-13, 2008.

SELECTION NOTE: Only eight athlete and eight volunteers will be selected to make this journey.  In addition to meeting the above criteria, nominations will be reviewed in the order in which they were received, taking into account geographic representation.
