5K Run Honors Arlington Police Officer

Runners take off this Saturday

For Immediate Release: November 5, 2007

Grab your running shoes and run for a reason!  Help support Special Olympics Texas at the Fifth Annual Joey Cushman 5K Run this Saturday, November 10 at River Legacy Park in Arlington.  The race begins at 8:00 a.m.  Runners of all levels – beginner through advanced – are invited to participate and compete.

Gather your friends and family and help make a difference in the lives of Special Olympics Texas athletes.  In addition to the 5K race, there will be a one-mile family run.  Race entry fee is $25.  All participants will receive a long sleeve t-shirt.  Register online at www.sotx.org/jc5k or on race day morning.

The Joey Cushman 5K was established to honor the memory of Corporal Joey Cushman of the Arlington Police Department.  Corporal Cushman was shot and killed during a training exercise on June 7, 2001.  The Arlington Police Department has chosen to honor his memory and continue his legacy of service to the Special Olympics Texas athletes.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is Special Olympics' largest grass-roots fundraiser.  At its most basic level, the Torch Run is an actual running event where all officers and athletes run the "Flame of Hope" to the Opening Ceremonies of local, state, national and international Games.  At its most fully developed, the Torch Run initiative encompasses a variety of fundraising vehicles in addition to the Torch Run itself, such as t-shirt or merchandise sales, donation and pledge collection, and special events.

Special Olympics Texas is a privately funded non-profit organization, providing year-round sports training and athletic competition for 25,841 children and adults with intellectual disabilities [mental retardation] in the Lone Star State.  For more information about Special Olympics Texas, call 800.876.JOIN or visit www.specialolympicstexas.org.
