Unified Sports Training School
Date: September 6, 2008
Area: 04 - Greater Houston
The Unified Sports™ program integrates athletes with and without intellectual disabilities [mental retardation] in training and competition programs as well as social activities. It is the goal of Unified Sports™ to integrate into community leagues those athletes with intellectual disabilities [mental retardation] who, because of their higher skill level, are ready to move themselves from traditional Special Olympics teams into mainstream athletic programs. Involvement in Unified Sports™ improves skill, self-esteem and self-image.
If you would like to become a Unified Partner, please contact the Area Office at the number below. If you are a Special Olympics coach and would like to develop a Unified Team, please make plans to attend the coaches training below.
Unified Sports training is for all coaches which are interested in beginning a Unified program. Coaches must already be certified in a traditional Special Olympics sport and have two years of coaching experience to attend this two hour training. This training will teach, establish guidelines for selection of partners, and expand upon the philosophy of this exciting program.
If you have any further questions, please contact the Special Olympics office or refer to the Unified Sports section of the website at www.sotx.org.
