Health and Fitness
Energy fitness is the ability of the body to store and use the body's food efficiently during exercise. Each sport uses energy differently, and the intensity of the activity will determine the aerobic or anaerobic energy pathway the body will use.
The aerobics pathway utilizes oxygen and energy that comes from the burning of fat and carbohydrates. It is used during activity which involves large muscle groups, is low in intensity, and is sustained over a long period of time. Examples include distance running, walking, and cycling.
The anaerobic pathway does not utilize oxygen, and the activity involved is of high intensity in which short bursts of energy are used. The pathway is far less efficient because energy comes from the breaking down of carbohydrates and may be characterized by general discomfort, muscle soreness, pain and oxygen debt. Examples include sprinting and powerlifting.
