Soccer

Soccer (football) is probably the world's most popular sport for children and adults alike. Similarly, it is one of the most popular sports for Special Olympics athletes. At the 1999 World Games in Raleigh, N.C., more than 1,800 athletes from 94 countries participated in soccer competition. In all, it is estimated that over 150,000 athletes compete in Special Olympics soccer competition worldwide.

Playing soccer requires very little equipment. Because it is easy to learn, soccer is appropriate for a wide range of age and ability levels. Athletes who participate in soccer are able to improve their overall physical fitness through training and competition. Because it is a team sport, athletes learn first hand the benefits of playing as a team. This promotes communication, camaraderie and friendships.

Special Olympics soccer is offered in 130 nations around the world. Additionally, every state in the U.S. offers individual skills, 5-a-side team, 11-a-side team, and Unified Sports™ competition.

Soccer is a summer sport for Special Olympics Texas with statewide competition at the Summer Games in May. The following events are sanctioned by Special Olympics Texas and are to be offered at all local, area and chapter competitions. The actual events scheduled and conducted at local, area and chapter competitions will be determined by a minimum number of entries in each event.
