With more than 400,000 athletes in US Programs, and athletes representing over 140 countries throughout the world, Athletics is Special Olympics' most popular sport. Athletics events combine both running and track and field competitions.

Athletics is a summer sport for Special Olympics Texas with statewide competition at the Summer Games in May. The following events are sanctioned by Special Olympics Texas and are to be offered at all local, area and chapter competitions. The actual events scheduled and conducted at local, area and chapter competitions will be determined by a minimum number of entries in each event. All athletes may enter one track event, one field event and one relay event or the pentathlon.
