Texas Torch Run
Texas Torch Run
In Texas, the Law Enforcement Torch Run began in 1985 and has grown to become one of the largest in the nation. In the last decade, Torch Run has contributed over $11 million through the dedication of thousands of law enforcement personnel fundraising on behalf of SOTX. 1999 marked the first time the Texas Torch Run surpassed the $1 million mark. 2001 found the Texas Torch Run as the No. 1 Highest Grossing Program in the world, raising over $2 million. 2002 saw Texas at No. 2, raising $1.43 million statewide. Over the last three years, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice has played a crucial role in the Torch Run contributions to SOTX, making up 50% of total dollars raised by correctional officers and other employees of this agency through events and annual SECC campaigns.
To highlight their efforts, over 500 volunteers carried the torch more than 2500 miles to San Marcos for the opening of the State Summer Games. During this time, officers volunteer in various capacities. The support provided by this dedicated group has contributed greatly to programs in local communities, which involve more than 23,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities [mental retardation].
