Texas Department of Criminal Justice

TDCJ first became involved in Torch Run in 1995 when Region III and Region V of the Institutional Division (ID) raised $30,000 for Special Olympics Texas. In 1996 additional ID Regions and units from the State Jail Division (SJD) were recruited helping to generate $136,000. By 1997 52 units participated raising a total of $160,000. In 1998 the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics was designated as an agency-purpose charity. Having more flexibility in fund raising that year employees from 70 units raised $285,000. By 1999 all ID and SJD units as well as offices of the Parole Division were involved raising $580,000. TDCJ further established itself as a major supporter of the Torch Run in Texas when employees raised $1 million last year.
