2011 World Summer GamesSpecial Olympics, the global leader for people with intellectual disabilities, will hold the world’s largest sporting event in 2011, uniting the world through sports in a celebration of the abilities and accomplishments of people with intellectual disabilities and forming a new global vision of acceptance. Close to 315 athletes, including 35 Special Olympics Texas athletes, will represent the United States in the 13th Special Olympics World Summer Games, June 25 through July 4, 2011 in Athens, Greece. These Games will be just the second time that the World Summer Games have been held in Europe following the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Dublin, Ireland. In addition to some 7,500 athletes from 185 countries, Special Olympics expects the 2011 World Summer Games to draw 25,000 volunteers, 3,000 event officials and more than 40,000 families, volunteers, spectators and journalists from every continent.
