Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg Run Press Conference

Law enforcement agencies from the Laredo area will gather at Webb County Commissioners Court on Tuesday, May 22 at 9:30 a.m. for a press conference to kick off the annual Flame of Hope Torch Run, which will go from Laredo to Arlington for the Special Olympics Texas Summer Games. The event is sponsored by Uni-Trade Forwarding, L.C.

Laredo Police Officer Albert Escobedo will address the crowd before law enforcement agencies from the area run with the lit torch using the following route: 1000 Houston (West) to Convent, right on Victoria (East) and left (North) on San Bernardo. It will end at 4615 San Bernardo Avenue.

The torch run will resume on Wednesday, May 23 at 6:00 a.m. at the I-35 North Checkpoint. Torch runners will set off from there to Cotulla, where they will pass the torch to runners in Dilley, Pearsall and San Antonio.

Participating agencies include: Webb County Sheriff Department, Webb County Constable Pct. 1, Laredo Police Department, Laredo Fire Department, U.S. Department of Homeland Security – U.S. Customs & Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Marshal Southern District of Texas-Laredo.

More than 400 law enforcement officers and first responders from around the state are expected in Arlington to deliver the Flame of Hope and participate in the Opening Ceremony. This year is the 48th anniversary of the Special Olympics Texas Summer Games. More than 2,900 athletes from across the state will participate in the competition, featuring events in Athletics (track and field), Basketball, Cycling, Gymnastics, Soccer and Tennis.
