History is Made at Summer Games

For the first time in the 48-year history of SOTX's Summer Games, the track and field competition included a Unified Champion Schools Quadrathlon. Six school districts from around the state brought two athletes and two Unified Partners – participants without intellectual disabilities. Together the four competed as a team, with each person participating in the 100m Run, 200m Run, Mini Javelin and the 4x100m Unified Relay. The scores were tallied using a point system much like a Pentathlon. It was an amazing experience for all athletes, Unified Partners and coaches involved. Congrats to all participants! We can't wait to see this event grow.

SOTX pays for equipment and uniforms for teams that compete in this program. If your school is interested in becoming part of this Unified Athletics program, please contact the Area office.

Participating schools in 2017:
Wichita Falls ISD: Rider High School
Newton ISD
Mission CISD
Spring ISD: Wells Middle School
Spring ISD: Dueitt Middle School
LCM High School

Is this Your Month? Give Us 5!

Are you buying a new car this month? Renewing your vehicle registration? Remember – you can round up on your vehicle registration fee and donate any amount to Special Olympics Texas, whether you're completing your registration or renewal online, in person or by mail! In 2016, this new program brought in almost $120,000 to SOTX. Please help us spread the word – with more than 22 MILLION cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats and trailers on the road in Texas, just $1 per registration could bring in some serious bucks and help us provide programs to even more children and adults with intellectual disabilities in Texas.

Letter Jacket Legislation Passes

HB 1645, sponsored by Texas State Rep. JM Lozano, R-Portland, passed both houses of the Texas Legislature and was signed into law on May 29, 2017, by Governor Greg Abbott. The legislation requires Texas school districts to allow students who participate in Special Olympics Texas to earn a letter on that basis if the district awards letters to typically developing students. The new law goes into effect on Sept. 1. Thank you, Rep. Lozano!
