Matthew Olguin, 24, began participating with Special Olympics when he entered JFK High School in San Antonio about 10 years ago.

The best advice he ever received? “Always try my best at everything I do,” said Olguin.

His favorite SOTX sports are basketball and bowling, but he has also enjoyed participating in equestrian, golf, roller skating and athletics competitions.

Olguin says, “My favorite thing about SOTX is traveling with my teammates and the  best memories are winning gold medals and teaching others new skills.”

In addition to being a former Area 20 Athlete of the Year, Olguin volunteers for SOTX in the Young Athletes Program and helps coach other athletes. This year he taught individual basketball skills to Cesar Lopez, of LBJ Elementary School, who competed at the Area 20 Basketball Skills Competition.

As for future goals, Olguin says, “I want to continue to participate and become a mentor for the younger athletes in my district.”

Thank you Matthew Olguin for the great work you are doing in Area 20!
