Becoming involved with SOTX at Mackenzie Middle School last year was a dream come true for Andrea Martinez. The seventh-grader first learned about the organization while in elementary school - after her sister became an athlete - but her school didn't participate. The wait was well worth it; today, she participates in bocce, bowling, basketball, rollerskating and athletics in Lubbock.  She's earned medals in each sport!

"Andrea has come out of her shell with Special Olympics," wrote her teacher, Mickie Korab. "She is very competitive and works very hard. She does not let her Cerebral Palsy hold her back in any way. She works as hard as any other athlete."

Outside of SOTX, Martinez participated in M.M.S.'s basketball team and made every one of her shots, even though she only has use of one hand. The 12 year old spent her summer doing clerical work alongside her mother at the Catholic Diocese of Lubbock. She's motivated to be a hard working, well-rounded athlete by watching her big sister compete and do her best.

Her hobbies include riding horses.
