So much has happened since Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Rockport on August 25 that it’s difficult to process everything. But out of all the loss and devastation, one thing has been clear: Our athletes, families, volunteers, coaches and law enforcement officers are strong. They are so strong.

History was made at the 2017 SOTX Summer Games, as the track and field competition included a Unified Champion Schools Quadrathlon. Six school districts from around the state brought two athletes and two Unified Partners – participants without intellectual disabilities. NCAA All-Americans they coached SOTX athletes on the fundamentals of basketball. The clinic was hosted by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and was held in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Women's Final Four, which took place in Dallas.

For the first time in nearly 10 years, Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) athletes in the South Plains Area will have the chance to swim for a gold medal in an area-wide Aquatics competition on Saturday, Sept. 10. The competition is being hosted by Southwest Aqua Sports (3909 N Frankford Ave), Lubbock’s largest swimming and scuba diving facility, which recently opened in July. Events will run from 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

On Thursday, July 21, Texas Roadhouse restaurants across the Lone Star state are participating in Tip A Cop Night, a Law Enforcement Torch Run fundraising event for Special Olympics Texas. During the dinner shift (5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at most locations), local officers from all across the state will exchange uniforms for aprons and will serve tables for tips, which all will be donated to SOTX at the end of the dinner shift. At two months old, doctors confirmed that Chantesia Steen was deaf. After getting cochlear implants at age 4 and then moving from Mississippi to Texas, Chantesia found her way into Special Olympics when she was 9 years old. Ten years later, she will compete in her first area competition in the pentathlon and team relay at Area 20's Spring Games on Saturday..

Austin is an enthusiastic young man and athlete. He says that his favorite thing about SOTX is making new friends and giving everyone high fives at the end of practice. Carley Fisk began competing with SOTX in 2013 when her school introduced it to her and is already very involved, as she participates in bowling, basketball, cycling, track and field, soccer, and aquatics. Through her first two years, she has built a collection of gold medals from Aquatics meets.

As many know, Special Olympics events don’t happen without the support of the volunteers. Each year, new volunteers get their first taste of one of these competitions. For some it will be a one-time ordeal and for a few others it will be an annual tradition. For Fort Worth’s Paul Brockway it became a part of life 47 years ago.

Area 4’s Kristen Rauch was one of 32 athletes from around the country, who got the chance to travel to Charlottesville, Va. for the Special Olympics Xperience Tennis Invitational. The annual three-day event for elite Special Olympics athletes (Level 6 and higher) was held Jan. 14-17 at the Boar's Head Sports Club. Participants competed in a round-robin tournament, University of Virginia tennis clinic and community doubles play.

LatinWorks, the award-winning, full-service cultural branding firm has been selected as the creative agency for Special Olympics Texas’ (SOTX) Capital Campaign. The latest project, done pro bono by LatinWorks, features two videos in which SOTX athletes are striving to complete their competition, but can only do so with the help of their supporters. The campaign, which will coincide with the organization’s End of Year Campaign, launched on Tuesday, Dec. 8 and will run until Friday, Jan. 15.

Dueitt Middle School students, staff and administrators filmed a video about its Meet in the Middle program.They invited other campuses within Spring ISD to join them for Unified Sports activities and talk about Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Special Olympics. Last weekend, Greater Houston and Heart of East Texas--area Special Olympics Texas athletes were recognized by a pair of local professional sports teams in the city. On Friday, Aug. 14, the Houston Astros invited 1,800 SOTX athletes to its game against the Detroit Tigers. A night later, members of the 2014 Team Texas Flag Football team were treated to a gameday experience of a lifetime by the Houston Texans.

On Thursday, July 23, 44 Texas Roadhouse locations in the State of Texas are participating in Tip-A-Cop Night, a Law Enforcement Torch Run fundraising event for Special Olympics Texas. Local officers across the state will exchange uniforms for aprons and will serve tables for tips, which all will be donated to SOTX at the end of the dinner shift.

IT’S FINALLY HERE! After months of anticipation, the Unified Relay Across America, presented by Bank of America, made its way into the Lone Star state on Friday afternoon. Since entering Texas at Port Arthur, the Flame of Hope has already made its way through Beaumont, Houston, Pasadena, Katy, San Antonio and will reach Austin later Monday afternoon. Three torches are simultaneously making their way across the U.S. right now! All three started on the East Coast on May 26 and will end up in Los Angeles, where they will unite to light the cauldron for the 2015 Special Olympics World Games. The Southern Route, which Texas is a part of, began in Miami.

About two weeks ago, news broke that 18 SOTX athletes and Unified Partners were named to the FC Dallas Special Olympics Texas team after successfully completing a tryout. To make things official, the newest members were presented with authentic game uniforms before club president Dan Hunt held a press conference at Toyota Stadium on Thursday, June 18, to introduce each of them to the public and sign them to contracts.

Special Olympics Texas' 2015 Summer Games are just days away! Every year, everyone looks forward to the event where the Games are officially declared underway - the Opening Ceremony. That will take place on Friday night at Maverick Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Games are ceremoniously declared open once the four regional torches, carrying the Flame of Hope, ignite the cauldron. This year's lighting will be extra exciting, because it will mark the first time that this particular cauldron will be used for SOTX's Opening Ceremony.

John Ruhly began volunteering with Special Olympics Texas in the late 1980's. He has been working with and driving Phillip Armstrong around to different events for years. Despite some wonderful athletes' mothers taking over the coaching of the bowling team around 2010, he still wanted to be involved with the Carrollton/Farmers Branch Cyclones' team and people, so he asked Phillip if he wanted to form a Unified team. Now, after every State Game, Phillip asks John to partner with him the next year.

In August 2014, Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) sent out an anonymous electronic survey to its athletes, family members, coaches, donors, volunteers and others to gain insight on what type of information the SOTX community wanted to know more about. It is envisioned that the results of the survey will be used to guide SOTX in the development of a resource library for its community, as well as to help focus research efforts undertaken by the organization.

A pair of second-half goals by Jacob Hill and Scott McIlhenny lifted the FC Dallas Special Olympics Texas squad to a 2-0 win over the Colorado Rapids Special Olympics Colorado team on Saturday night at Toyota Stadium. Hill broke the scoreless tie in the 32nd minute before McIlhenny registered an insurance tally in the 39th minute. The game was played as part of the partnership between Special Olympics and MLS WORKS, Major League Soccer’s community outreach initiative.
