Bruno Accamando

Bruno Accomando has been a volleyball official for about 5 years. He found out about the Winter Games through an email from the Austin Volleyball Association, looking for volunteers. He also now referees soccer for SOTX. Although he’s been a soccer and volleyball referee for years, and coached soccer when his kids were younger, he’d never been involved with Special Olympics until that email from the AVA.

“I always liked the Special Olympics concept. If you can help out, then you should just do it,” he said.

His best piece of advice to someone thinking about getting involved, but worried because they don’t have much (or any) Special Olympics experience? “If you never start, you’ll never get experience.”

Accomando’s favorite thing about Special Olympics is “the players. They put all the effort in the world, all the effort they have into it. Not like the rest of us, who sometimes get lazy and slouch. Come out and watch them. Come out and volunteer. You don’t have to be a referee, you can be any other assistance for anything else.”
