John Ruhly began volunteering with Special Olympics Texas in the late 1980's. He has been working with and driving Phillip Armstrong around to different events for years. Despite some wonderful athletes' mothers taking over the coaching of the bowling team around 2010, he still wanted to be involved with the Carrollton/Farmers Branch Cyclones' team and people, so he asked Phillip if he wanted to form a Unified team. Now, after every State Game, Phillip asks John to partner with him the next year.
Matthew Olguin, 24, began participating with Special Olympics when he entered JFK High School in San Antonio about 10 years ago. In addition to being a former Area 20 Athlete of the Year, Olguin volunteers for SOTX in the Young Athletes Program and helps coach other athletes.
With our Area 10 Basketball Tournament cancelled due to inclement weather last week and no reschedule planned, we wanted to give a special shout out to our generous hosts of the event for the past 3 years. Our theme for the tournament this year was “We Got This” and Grand Prairie ISD without a doubt had this tournament covered.
